Ursuline Academy Girls Let The Cat (Food) Out of the Bag!

Animal Rescue New Orleans (ARNO) announces a welcome visit from fifty sixth-graders who attend Ursuline Academy in New Orleans. The school was notified that ARNO needed help in opening 3-oz. bags of cat food, about 64,000 of these little bags had been donated to help feed rescued animals from Katrina. Ursuline responded quicker than a cat and the students will appear at ARNO’s warehouse in Elmwood on Tuesday, March 7, from 9am until 2pm to get the chore accomplished toute suite!

Animal Rescue New Orleans, a volunteer organization, collects donated pet food from all over the country to aid in their daunting task of rescuing pets from the devastated areas left by Hurricane Katrina. Cats and dogs are fed in uninhabited areas until they can be trapped, treated for any medical ailments, spayed and neutered. The LA/SPCA in Orleans Parish is aiding ARNO by providing them space to keep these animals for possible owner reunions, and servicing the pets by placing their pictures and descriptions on PetHarbor.com. Both organizations are committed to aiding these animals who made it through the storm before they procreate and add to the stray animal population.

Recently ARNO joined forces with HANO (Housing Authority of New Orleans) to humanely sweep housing developments of all animals who could be living inside deserted units. ARNO is also augmenting and assisting the LA/ SPCA with trap/sweep operations at specific properties in Orleans Parish as demolition is scheduled. Inviting all citizens who want to volunteer for either organization to call and give a few hours a week, ARNO Rescue Coordinator Robin Beaulieu states, “It’s a big lift to all of us when new volunteers are scheduled, whether they are local or from out of town.
It makes you realize that lots of people still care, including these Ursuline students, about the animals that have been left homeless and hungry after Katrina.”

Ursuline Academy is located at 2635 State Street in New Orleans. Established in 1727 Ursuline Academy is an all-girl, Catholic elementary and high school whose motto is “serviam” which means “to serve.” Ursuline reopened after Katrina hit on January 9, 2006.
